When we think of pilots and aviation, we normally see strong, attractive guys flying a jet, but women are taking their place.

Female pilots are becoming more common. According to Mireille Goyer of the Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide, there are slightly under 7,000 female airline pilots in the United States, accounting for fewer than 5% of the total. However, there are currently 15,971 female student pilots in the system, accounting for around 15% of the total. “Closing the gender-gap begins with an up-close and personal introduction to aviation, as well as meeting local relatable role-models,” she said. (There is a program for that at the Institute.)

Mindy Lindheim, a pre-med student in her third year of college, met a neighbor who was a Delta pilot and changed her future plans completely. She enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University within a month. While working as a mechanic’s helper, she completed her degree in Aeronautical Science. She is currently the Regional Sales Director for Textron Aviation. She travels across the country with Textron Aviation and enjoys all elements of her job.

She ended herself selling planes by happenstance. “I had no idea a flying sales job existed, so when I found out it was a career, I had to pursue it.” The challenge of a sales career combined with the flying aspect of performing demo flights, moving airplanes, and displaying them at exhibitions makes a perfect storm for me.”

She says. “My go-to favourite airplane for almost any type of day or flight is G36 Bonanza,”
